WP 4: Co-ordination of Pilot Installation Activities
Leader: Dr. Britta Buchholz, MVV Energie AG, Germany

This report summarizes objectives and results of the IRED work package 4 "Co-ordination of Pilot Installation Activities".
This work package has significantly enhanced knowledge exchange between the project leaders of pilot installations in Europe which demonstrate the integration of renewable and distributed energy resources into the distribution grid. The objectives have been:
  • to provide an overview of relevant pilot installations in Europe and identify gaps that need to be addressed in future European Research Areas.
  • to enhance the dialogue with local, regional, national and European governments
  • to elaborate information and training material for experts, decision makers and students
As a result, the final overview of 30 European pilot installations will be published on the IRED web site www.ired-cluster.org in January 2008 in form of a set of reference sheets. Each reference sheet addresses the project duration, profile of the installations including electric capacity of the distributed generators, the technologies used, the classification of the site and the project leader. In addition, the main tasks of this pilot installation are shown. A graphic or photography of the pilot installation gives an impression of the site.
The identified necessities for future European Research Areas were introduced to the European Technology Platform SmartGrids through active participation of the IRED members in various functions within the platform.
As second objective, the work package contributed to the IRED global objective to raise awareness of decision makers. Objective is to enhance the dialogue between the European parliament as well as national governments and the IRED research cluster.
The team organised a dinner debate on "Future Electricity Grids" for Members of the European Parliament on November 30, 2004, in the Bibliothèque Solvay, Brussels. About 80 "high level" guests from the European Parliament, the European Commission and representations of the member states as well as members of the IRED cluster attended the dinner debate. The event had an impact on discussion on the topic in Parliament.
Information and training material was elaborated and presented in various international and national conferences, expert workshops, CIGRE working groups, in-house trainings and university lectures.
