WP 10: Organisation of Contractor meetings, Experts and Workshops
Leader: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Schmid, ISET, Executive Board, Germany

Creating of a systematic information exchange between the WP-coordinators and with all relevant actors from the policy and programme-making area with industry and research organization are the objectives of work package 10.

2004

A first international colloquium "Selected Recent Results on Integration of the Renewable Energies and Distributed Generation" was organised at 30th June 2004 at Kassel, Germany. Under the initiative and guidance of the European Commission - DG Research, the "First International Conference on the Integration of Renewable Energy Sources and Disributed Energy Resources" was jointly organized by the FP6-Cluster on the Integration of Renewable Energy Sources and Distributed Generation into the European Electricity Grid (IRED) and by the FP6-Integrated Project EU-DEEP ("The birth of a European Distributed Energy Partnership that will help the large-scale Implementation of Distributed Energy Resources in Europe"), in collaboration with the Department of Energy USA, Natural Resources Canada and METI (Japan).

Around 250 representatives from the industry (40%), the utilities (16%), regulatory and public authorities (14%) and the research community (30%) have been brought together to review the current state of the art and to identify the needs and opportunities that will enable a sub-stantial medium to long-term penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into the power networks whilst maintaining a high level of security and quality of power supply in Europe. The following actions have been agreed based on the conference outcome:
  • A network for European test laboratories for prenormative work and the development of standards will be established. This network will contribute to reinforce the European position on this field and, on the other hand, it will cooperate with relevant laboratories out-side Europe.
  • Setup of a network for pilot plants on a global scale for the development of common standards and for the exchange of operational results.
  • Priority will be given to a stronger coordination of European and emerging Regional and National programmes.
  • Decision to continue the dialogue on a global scale with the preparation of the next con-ference to be realized early 2006 in the USA.
  • To improve information exchange on a scientific level, the "International Journal of Distributed Energy Resources", which is supported by European and American Editors, has been launched at the conference.
  • Setup of a European Platform on Integration with a participation of all stakeholders in Research, Industry and National Governments, appears to be the best instrument to propose sustainable solutions in this area. In this line, the Commission encouraged the research Cluster IRED to be the embryo of such Platform.

2005

NTUA together with the EC and the co-ordinator of the IRED-Cluster organised a dedicated Round Table "The Effects of Dispersed and Renewable Generation on Power System Security" on the 13th of April 2005 in the frame of the CIGRE Symposium "Power Systems with Dispersed Generation", April 13-16, 2005, in Athens.

A next international workshop was held in June 2005 in Japan to expand the collaboration with the Japanese. In the frame of the official German Year in Japan 2005/2006 a half-day workshop was organised on the 9th June integrated as side event into the EXPO WCWRF 2005, World Conference on Wind Energy, Renewable Energy, Fuel Cell & Exhibition, 7-10-June 2005, Hamamatsu, Japan.

CIDAE together with the co-ordinator of the IRED-Cluster organised under the guidance and support of the European Commission Directorate for Research the European Workshop of IRED to facilitate the Start-up of the Mirror Group of the Technology Platform for the Electricity Networks of the Future, on the 22nd June 2005, in Vitoria, Spain.

Another international workshop which is relevant in the context of the IRED cluster was held in November 2005 at Kassel. The 10th "Kasseler Symposium Energy Systems Technology" which is yearly organised by ISET was expanded the first time to a complete international symposium. It was arranged in cooperation with several national partners, the German Environmental Ministry an the EC and it was titled "The future of Distribution Grids".

Contractor meetings were arranged at the 2005-02-07 in Brussels, the 2005-04-13 at Athens in the context of the CIGRE sysmposium and at the 2005-06-22 at Vitoria in the context of start-up meeting for the mirror group for the planned technology platform on smart grids.

The research Cluster IRED stated the initiative for the setup of a European Platform on Smart Grids with a participation of all stakeholders in Research, Industry and National Governments. Several meetings and telephone conferences were held in this context in 2005.

2006

The highlight of the third IRED period in the field of conferences and workshops was the 2nd International Conference on the Integration of Renewable and Distributed Energy Sources in Napa/California/USA from the 2006-12-04 to 08. This conference is a follow up of the first conference, which was held in December 2004 and which was organized by the IRED cluster in cooperation with EU-Deep. Representatives of the IRED cluster were involved in the programme committee for this conference and the invitation on several high level speakers as well as own contributions were done by the IRED cluster members.

An international workshop which is relevant in the context of the IRED cluster was held in November 2006 at Kassel/Germany. The 11th "Kasseler Symposium Energy Systems Technology" which is yearly organised by ISET was expanded the second time to a complete international symposium. It was arranged in cooperation with several national partners, the German Ministry for Education and Research and it was titled "Information and communication technologies for tomorrow´s energy supply".

Contractor meetings were arranged at the 2006-05-22 in Kassel/Germany, the 2006-12-07 at Napa/California in the frame of the 2nd International Conference on the Integration of Renewable and Distributed Energy Sources. Additionally several participants or representatives of the IRED-Cluster attended the consulting meeting of IRED and the European Commission to give an coordinated input in the FP7 Activity Smart Energy Networks at the 2006-06-20 in Brussels/Belgium. In agreement with the EC scientific officer the fourth meeting for the third IRED period was planned in conjunction with the European Brokerage day for the FP7 Research Programm at the end of 2006. Finally the brokerage day was moved and realised in February of 2007.

After the setup of a European Platform on Smart Grids, which was started by the initiative of the IRED research cluster in 2005, the IRED supports the continuing process of the technology platform. Several meetings and telephone conferences were held in this context in 2006. The main outcomes were the vision paper and the strategic research agenda (SRA) of the Platform.

2007

The highlights of the forth IRED period in the field of conferences and workshops were the "DENSY - Distributed Energy Systems Seminar", October 22-23, 2007, Helsinki, Finland and the workshop "Electricity and Mobility - Grid Integration and Transportation", November 7th, 2007, Monastery Banz, Bad Staffelstein, Germany and.

Contractor meetings were arranged at the 2007-02-28 in Vienna/Austria beside the brokerage day of the EU, at the 2007-10-22 in Helsinki/Finland beside the DENSY seminar and at the 2007-11-07 at Bad Staffelstein/Germany beside the workshop Electricity and Mobility and the 2nd General Assembly Smart Grids.

Additionally the IRED cluster tried to invite the GENDIS project to participate in the Workshop on Electricity and Mobility and proposed a common project meeting of the GENDIS and IRED project, but without of success.

After the setup of a European Platform on Smart Grids, which was started by the initiative of the IRED research cluster in 2005, the IRED cluster supports the continuing process of the technology platform. Several meetings and telephone conferences were held in this context in 2007. The highlight in this context was the second general assembly of the technology platform Smart Grids in November in Germany.
